Made-to-measure lumber, now made-to-order online.
We designed and built Welker's a brand, catalog, and live quoting platform for custom-milled cedar — so customers can spec the exact cut they need, watch the board-foot price total as they go, and send the order straight to the mill.
Every cut is different — and every quote was a phone call.
Welker's has milled cedar and pine in Fresno since 1984, cutting lumber to whatever size a customer needs. It's a great way to do business — and a hard one to quote. Pricing a custom order meant working out the board feet by hand, over the phone, while the customer waited on a callback.
Welker's wanted to put that process online without losing the made-to-order feel: let customers spec their own cut, see an honest price, and send it straight to the mill — no phone tag, no waiting.
We built it around the board-foot model.
Before designing a single screen, we mapped how Welker's actually prices a cut: board feet per piece, times a per-board-foot cedar rate. That one calculation became the engine the whole product runs on — so the prices customers see match exactly how the mill quotes.
We scoped a focused first release — a product catalog, a live quote builder, and a simple way to manage incoming orders — and shipped it as a working prototype the team could put in front of real customers.
Configure a cut, watch the price total live.
Each product opens into a configurator: pick a profile and length, fine-tune the exact thickness, width, and length, choose the top cut and surface, and set a quantity. The board feet per piece and the estimated price update the moment anything changes.
Customers can even leave a note for the mill. When it's right, it drops into the quote with the full spec attached — no re-keying and no miscommunication on the shop floor.
One order board runs the whole mill.
Flip to the Mill view and every order becomes a work order: a clean cut list with exact dimensions and board feet, the customer's details and fulfillment, the totals, and a one-tap Start milling.
The activity log auto-notifies the customer at each stage — submitted, approved, milling, ready — with an email and a text, so the shop never sends a manual update and customers stop calling to ask where their order is.
Then they watch it move.
Every order gets its own page with a live status tracker — submitted, approved, milling, packaging, ready, delivered — so customers always know exactly where their lumber is, with an email and a text at every step.

"It used to take a phone call and a notepad to price a job. Now customers spec it themselves — and the order shows up ready to cut."
